Nomad BJJ Cleans Up at Montreal Grappling Grand Prix
October 1st, 2011 Nomad Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brought a team of 6 competitors to the Montreal Grappling Grand Prix.
- Louis Bernard-Desrosiers
- Cédric Cobban
- Mathieu Dubois
- Mistral Gedeon
- Marco Longari
- Maxime Poulin
The tournament was really well run and made use of a round robin format, which meant that each fighter was guaranteed 4 fights as they had a match with each competitor in their division.
A big thanks to Mr. David Aguzzi, he really knows how to put on a great show!
Here are our team results!
Louis Bernard-Desrosiers (Advanced Division)
Louis had a very tough division. His first match was against a really tough brown belt. Louis was able to place him in a couple dangerous positions such as a sitting anaconda choke and a darce choke, but unfortunately due to a takedown early in the match he lost on points.
His second match involved him playing guard and eventually locking in a super tight triangle. His opponent was starting to slip out, and Louis switched to an elbow lock and then flowed back into a Triangle choke which he used to finish the fight.
In his third match his opponent pulled closed guard early and quickly transitioned into a straight armbar. Unfortunately Louis hurt his elbow during this match and was unable to continue with the tourney.
A few people mentioned that this was probably the toughest division in the tournament, Louis showed a lot of heart and worked hard the entire time. Can't wait to see him in the next tournament!
Cédric Cobban (Advanced Division)
Details coming soon
Mathieu Dubois (Beginner Division)
Matt had a great showing that day! He tried a lot of different strategies, and had a lot of success!
His first match was won by a quick armbar from the Mount.
His second match was ended via ref stoppage. Mat had executed a takedown from the rear clinch and his opponent landed on his shoulder and injured it. He could not continue so Mat got the win.
In his third match he established a solid North South position with a Kimura armlock, but as his opponent was defending he opted to switch to the Sheila Choke aka the scissor choke, for the win.
He won his fourth with a Triangle armbar.
In his fifth match he used his patented Eddie Bravo Ninja Roll to get the back and win by points.
And in the final he won with a nice rear naked choke!
Matt walked away with the Gold Medal! Great Job!
Mistral Gedeon (Advanced Division)
Mistral had 3 good matches.
He managed to win his first fight by taking his opponent down and dominating positionally before finally taking the back and finishing with a rear naked choke!
His second he was behind on points and spent a lot of time fighting out of leglock attempts and unfortunately lost.
His third he was going for some sort of back take and his opponent locked in a really tight kneebar.
Mistal showed a lot of heart going in the advanced division despite his limited time training with us. Looking forward to his next run at a medal!
Marco Longari (Beginner Division)
Marco was a double leg machine at this tournament. I think watching him fight this weekend included half of the double legs I've seen in 10 years of doing BJJ.
He finished his first fight with a super tight arm triangle.
His second on points, taking his opponent down and dominating, taking mount among other positions.
His third fight he finished with a beautiful north south guillotine choke. I love seeing these.
His fourth he finished with another arm triangle
In his fifth he was down 4 points and shot in for a takedown with 10 seconds left. During the takedown his opponent twisted his knee and couldn't continue, so Marco was given the match ;-)
And he won his final match on points once again, getting a couple nice double legs and dominating from the top.
Great stuff Marco, that gold medal was well deserved!
Maxime Poulin (Advanced Division)
Maxime had an awesome day, dominating from bottom to top. I don't think a single point was scored on him.
Each match he systematically pulled butterfly, got on top with either an elevator or x-guard sweep and proceeded to dominate.
He won is first match via Rear Naked Choke, his second match was against team mate Cedric via points.
His third and forth he won via points from sweeping and passing the guard.
His fifth was by another rear naked choke.
And in the final he finished with a Kimura armlock from the north south position.
For his efforts he received a gold medal and an all expense paid trip to Las Vegas to compete in the IBJJF World NoGi Championship in Los Angeles, California at the Pyramid in November!
Videos of the event can be found here.
Everyone showed a lot of heart and had a great time. We had a few people asking where we were from, as we aren't typically in the Montreal BJJ scene.
We can't wait for David's next tournament in December.
