Last weekend Nomad Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu hosted a Seminar with Mr. Roy Harris from San Diego California. Mr. Harris is a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and an expert in Jeet Kune Do.

We had excellent attendance with many people traveling from Sherbrooke to Granby for the seminar. We even had three people make the trip from Vermont for this event!

On the first day, Mr. Harris focused on the Triangle choke. His goal was to improve your choke mechanics. This will allow you to finish your opponent more efficiently, with less effort. We also covered dealing with various types of resistance once you have applied part of the triangle choke. Mr. Harris covered about 90 percent of what you would encounter when trying to finish this “Basic” submission. The first day filled 3 hours of instruction without covering a single entry into the choke. This says a lot about Mr. Harris’s depth of knowledge in regards to the Triangle Choke (I get the feeling we were just scratching the surface ;-)

On the second day we focused on controlling and attacking your opponent from the Closed Guard.

The goal of these techniques was to learn how to properly position yourself and apply pressure. This will encourage your opponent to make a mistake and place their neck, arm or balance in danger. Slight details provided excellent insight on how to make your opponent uncomfortable, despite being in the top position. I saw a lot of eyes light up as things began to click in people’s minds! This day covered numerous sweeps, armlocks and triangle choke entries once you apply proper pressure.

Here is a sample of what he taught!

We also really appreciated the extra time Mr. Harris took to answer questions both on the seminar material, and additional questions that were unrelated to our topics. There was one question where everyone in the room stood up and got really close to make sure they could see ;-)

We had a great turn out this year, we received  a lot of support from students in Sherbrooke, Granby, and Vermont. We’re looking forward to making next years seminar with Mr. Harris even bigger!

Thanks to everyone for coming out and we’ll see you next year!
